“Creiamo musica per suonare a spettacoli su cui potevamo solo lavorare prima” – Intervista a Rest In Dust

Rest In Dust è una band alternative nu metal dalla Polonia formata dall’ingegnere del suono Marcin Chomentowski e dalla vocalist Marietta Balcerzak. Uno stile controverso quello che presentano questi due artisti: una donna come lead vocalist e voce di supporto narrativa/rap con contorno costuito da elettronica e assoli di chitarra vecchia scuola. Inoltre il sound tanto potente mette insieme gothic metal, alternative metal, groove metal e Nu metal.
1. Benvenuti! Potete dirci qualcosa del vostro progetto musicale?
Siamo due persone che hanno guardato concerti dalle quinte del palco in tutta la Polonia per anni mentre lavoravamo nell’industria della musica dal vivo, e ora come Rest In Dust creiamo musica per suonare a spettacoli su cui potevamo solo lavorare prima.
2. Puoi raccontarci qualcosa di questa esperienza?
Chh lavora come backline e tecnico del suono e ingegnere del suono. Dipende dal tipo di lavoro assegnato e dai soldi. Mary lavora in uno dei più grandi club di musica in Polonia, ma quando ha “troppo tempo libero” lavora anche sul palco come tecnico del suono. Musicalmente siamo attivi da molti anni ma Rest In Dust è il nostro primo progetto su larga scala.
3. I tuoi video sono impressionanti e così attraenti. Come nascono?
Giriamo i nostri video a casa, o principalmente a casa, tranne il nostro primo singolo Life’s a bitch che è stato girato in un magazzino della compagnia di suoni dal vivo per la quale Chh lavora. Parti che non possiamo riprendere in casa che di solito facciamo negli edifici abbandonati nelle vicinanze. Il posto in cui viviamo in questo momento è pieno di edifici della Seconda Guerra Mondiale e luoghi devastati dal comunismo del dopoguerra, quindi abbiamo molto da scegliere. Dal punto di vista tecnico è una telecamera, due luci e molte ore di lavoro.
4. Il vostro sound si riferisce anche al Nu metal. Quali sono gli artisti di questo genere musicale che vi piacciono?
La maggior parte di loro. A Chh non piacciono i generi metal “classici” per non dire altro. Nella nostra casa si possono ascoltare principalmente Rammstein, Limp Bizkit e un po’ di Marilyn Manson, anche se siamo aperti a qualsiasi tipo di musica.
5. Quale dei tuoi brani già presenti su Youtube preferisci? Perché quello?
La nostra opinione in merito cambia con il tempo. Ogni canzone ha uno stile diverso, quindi dipende dal nostro umore quali sono i nostri preferiti. È più facile dire quale non ci piace. È sempre la più recente, perché abbiamo passato così tante ore su quella traccia, l’ascoltavamo centinaia di volte mentre la mixavamo, quindi iniziamo ad essere infastiditi da questa canzone. Dopo aver pubblicato una canzone, di solito non ci torniamo per almeno due settimane.
6. Parliamo anche di libri e fumetti oltre che di musica. C’è qualche libro, fumetto o graphic novel che preferisci in particolare?
I fumetti non sono la nostra tazza di tè. Leggiamo molti libri, ma soprattutto per finalità educative. Quando abbiamo bisogno di divertirci guardiamo film e serie TV, o nel caso di Chh, combattimenti di boxe.
7. Avete preso lezioni di canto o hai fatto tutto da solo?
Abbiamo preso un paio di lezioni di canto metal ma sinceramente per assicurarci che quello che stiamo facendo lo stiamo facendo bene e non ci stiamo distruggendo la gola. La maggior parte delle cose che facciamo le abbiamo imparate da sole.
8. Quali strumenti usate per la vostra musica?
Chh ha costruito una chitarra personalizzata per questo progetto usando pezzi e parti di strumenti distrutti. La chitarra è stata dipinta con il sangue e su di essa sono stati fatti dei disegni. Doveva essere solo un supporto per un video musicale, ma sorprendentemente è sembrato fantastico, quindi abbiamo deciso di usarla per registrare le nostre tracce. La nostra batteria è anche essa un progetto fai da te creato da Chh. Per farla breve, abbiamo acquistato una batteria vecchia, usata, a basso prezzo, l’abbiamo riparata, decorata e installato un sistema fai-da-te che ci permette di usarla come batteria elettronica. Potrai vederlo meglio in un video musicale per il nostro prossimo singolo Rules of the game, che uscirà l’11 marzo.

1. Welcome! Can you tell anything about your musical project?
We are two people who have watched concerts from stage wings all across the Poland for years while working in live music industry, and now as Rest In Dust we create music to play at shows we could only work on before.
2. Can you tell us anything about this experience?
Chh works as a backline and sound technician and sound engineer. It depends on a type of job that is assigned and money. Mary works in one of the biggest music clubs in Poland, but when she has “too much free time” she also works on stage as a sound technician. Musically we have been active for many years but Rest In Dust is our first large-scale project.
3. Your videos are impressive and so attractive. How are they born?
We shoot our videos at home, or mostly at home, except our first single Life’s a bitch which was shot in a warehouse of the live sound company for which Chh works. Parts that we cannot shoot in the house we usually do in the abandoned buildings nearby. The place we live right now is full of World War two builidings and places devastated by postwar communism, so we have lots to choose from. From the technical perspective it’s a one camera, 2 lights and many hours of work.
4. Your sound also refers to Nu metal. Which are the artists of this musical genre that you like?
Most of them. Chh doesn’t really like “classic” metal genres to say the least. In our home you can mostly hear Rammstein, Limp Bizkit and a bit of Marilyn Manson, although we are open to any kind of music.
5. Which of your songs already present on Youtube do you prefer? Why that one?
Our opinion on that changes with time. Each song has different style, so it depends on our mood which are our favorites. It’s easier to say which we don’t like. It’s always the newest one, because we’ve spent so many hours on that track, listened it hundreds of times while mixing it so we start to get annoyed by this song. After releasing a song we usually don’t get back to it for at least two weeks.
6. We also talk about books and comics as well as music. Is there any book or comic or graphic novel that you prefer in particular?
Comics are not our cup of tea. We read a lot of books but mostly for educational porpuses. When we need some fun we watch movies and TV series, or in Chh‘s case, boxing fights.
7. Did you take lessons for singing or did you do it all by yourself?
We have taken a couple of lessons in metal singing but motsly to make sure that what we are doing we’re doing right and not destroying our throats. Most of the things we do we’ve learned by ourselves.
8. What instruments do you use for your music?
Chh have build a custom guitar for this project using pieces and parts from destroyed instruments. The guitar was painted with blood and then a drawings were made on it. It was supposed to be only a prop for a music video, but surprisingly, it happened to sound amazing, so we’ve decided to use it to record our tracks. Our drumset was also a DIY project created by Chh. Long story short, we bought and old, used, low-priced drumset, we fixed it, decorated it and installed a DIY system that allows us to use it as electronic drums. You will be able to see it better in a music video for our next single Rules of the game, which will be released on March 11.
